Errol “Skippah” Blackwood, born in the Accompong Hills of Jamaica, found his musical roots early through church, with his father being a pastor. After moving to Toronto, Canada, he taught himself bass guitar and began exploring a wide range of musical influences including rock, funk, soul, and Nyahbinghi drumming. His passion for music led him to perform with various bands and eventually join the Kitchener-based group People’s Choice, where he became deeply involved in the local music scene. In 1981, after relocating to Kitchener, he co-founded the iconic Canadian reggae group Messenjah.
Blackwood is regarded as a pioneer in Canadian reggae, known for his messages of positivity, redemption, and cultural empowerment. Concerned about the genre’s shift toward negativity, he remains committed to creating music that stays true to its roots. A strong advocate for Black history and education, he continues to write and perform songs that inspire and uplift audiences, keeping reggae’s original spirit alive.
