Lucy MacNeil has been a core member of the Barra MacNeils for 37 years, contributing to their legacy of Cape Breton music and dance. With her brothers, she has toured extensively across Europe, the United States, Canada, and beyond, sharing their traditional sound. Since recording their first self-titled album in 1986, the group has consistently produced music, toured, and collaborated with notable artists such as Celine Dion, Kenny Rogers, and Rita MacNeil, appearing on her CBC variety show and national Christmas tours. Their last album, On the Bright Side, was released in 2017, showcasing their enduring dedication to their craft.
Lucy has also contributed individually to the music world, serving as an artist-in-residence for the Celtic Colours International Music Festival in 2015 and collaborating with Symphony Nova Scotia for Rita MacNeil tribute concerts in 2014 and 2017. During the pandemic, she began working on her first solo album, inspired by a desire to leave behind a personal legacy of traditional music and song during a time of global upheaval. This project reflects her lifelong connection to her cultural roots and her passion for sharing Cape Breton’s rich musical heritage.
